During the 14th and 15th centuries, Thaxted was one of the wealthiest places in Essex. From Pevsner: "Its present population of about 1,800 makes one forget that it vied in business importance with Saffron Walden and indeed many towns now ten and twenty times as populous. Yet only by remembering that can the size of the church be understood."
