At this church, the threat is from the Stansted Airport expansion. Here we see Tilty church from the south, rather obscured!

St Mary the Virgin, Tilty Church - The first [on-foot] view of the church, from the modest car-parking area, is of the exterior of the East End. Instantly, the building strikes one as being 'different'. It seems that the 'larger than usual' chancel may be the cause here.

St Mary the Virgin, Tilty Church - This church is the last remaining part of the great Cistercian Abbey, founded at Tilty in 1153. The church itself forms what used to be the 'chapel outside the gates' of the abbey. Nothing else of the former abbey survives, except a fragment of rock, in fields to the North. The nave was built first, around 1220.

St Mary the Virgin, Tilty Church - This picture cannot do this church justice. The first thing that hits you as you walk inside is how open, spacious and light it is inside. I urge you to go and visit this one if you get a chance. It is simply beautiful. If you do go, remember to sign the guestbook. In the fight against the Stansted Airport expansion, it is important to show that churches are in constant use.

St Mary the Virgin, Tilty Church - This window was restored to it's former glory some years ago. Unfortunately, the modern workmanship did not meet up to the standards of the original workmanship. The window will need re-restoring some time in the not too distant future.
