St Peter-on-the-Wall, Bradwell-juxta-Mare Church - I'd driven out to Bradwell, intending to do quite a few churches that day. As I passed Woodham Ferrers, the weather started to turn rather dark, and it looked as though I was in for rather a wet day. As I pulled up to the car park just before the farm track leading to St Peter's, the weather began to brighten up somewhat. This first picture still clearly shows the haze that was present near the coast that day, not to mention the mess that had been created on the track.

St Peter-on-the-Wall, Bradwell-juxta-Mare Church - Getting closer ... The chapel was built shortly after St Cedd's arrival (AD 653), down the east coast from Lindisfarne. Built as St Peter's Cathedral in AD 654, it has had a varied life, seeing it used as a barn, and then finally being restored for use as a chapel in 1920.

St Peter-on-the-Wall, Bradwell-juxta-Mare Church - From being disappointed that the weather was being so yucky, my mood changed very quickly. The sky seemed determined to be special, and I was soon treated to one of those gloomy skies ahead with the sun shining brightly from behind me.

St Peter-on-the-Wall, Bradwell-juxta-Mare Church - On this approach to St Peter's, the small building to the left intrudes into the overall view of the area. St Peter's had been alone for so long. Heaven only knows why it was seen fit to build a beach hut (sorry - vestry) here in the late 1950s! Sacrilege!

St Peter-on-the-Wall, Bradwell-juxta-Mare Church - The W wall, clearly showing the arched brickwork where this once joined onto an apsidal chancel. The chancel is marked on the ground. It was demolished once the chapel was put to alternative uses as a barn, sometime in the seventeenth century. Only in the early twentieth century was the building returned to its original use.
